Big online dating sites websites build frighteningly huge piles of data on user behaviour. It's the kinda stuff that gets Geek Boy a little bit excited.
So when I saw the results of some data mining from Sam Yagan, CEO of OkCupid it made the nerd in me go a bit weak at the knees. With over 3.5 million active users these guys have access to a LOT of information.
This ain't no touchy feely girly "relationship" advice - these are facts based on hard numbers so if you're serious about online dating, sit up and listen at the back!
Chaps who post photos looking directly at the camera get lower response rates. Tilt your head to enhance your masculine profile. Girls seem to like it.
For the girls, the opposite effect. Don't turn your head in a profile shot - blokes like it when you're looking at them.
Girls in their 20's who show some cleavage get 24% more response. If you're in your 30's, this rises to a 79% increase. Shock fact: men like boobs.
(Before anyone goes off on a feminist rant, we're reporting stats so please draw your own conclusions elsewhere.)
People in their 20's don't seem to care what colour you are - they message each other in equal measure.
Those in the 50+ age group contact people of their own race twice as often as those of different racial origin. (But some of them smell a bit of wee too, so forgive them their quirks.)
Men overstate their actual height by an average of 2 inches. Unfortunately Sam doesn't elaborate on any other measurements they overstate - I'd expect a similar score.

Richard is the technical brains behind Dating Trail and prefers conversations in binary to real human contact. However he does know some strange things about dating; albeit not from experience (he's asexual like an amoeba) but rather from crunching numbers and peering into databases. He's nerdy but sometimes interesting.
